Challenges of Unemployment in the Context of the Crisis,

Social Protection, Employability, Flexibility

January 27-28, 2011

Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic

The economic crisis in 2008-09 affected strongly the labour market and the consequences persist even in times when signs of  the revival of the economy appear.

Unemployment hit often people which have had no experience of unemployment previously, often both partners in the family with a serious consequences for their living standard and psychical stress, in increasing numbers the older workers, and also young people who enter the labour market. At the same time some structural imbalances in the labour market have deepen and the position of the traditionally vulnerable groups in the labour market has become much worse accompanied with risks of long-term unemployment.

The policy challenge is a search for short-term as well as long-term horizon effective solutions. Uneasy problem is above all the adequate protection of income while preserving sufficient incentives, improving employability of people, support to securities in the labour market (securities of employment and income), flexible labour market as well as modernization of the institutions of labour market regulation.
