PhD-Workshop
MULTI-LEVEL APPROACHES TO THE ANALYSIS OF WORK, CARE AND WELFARE
An introductory workshop to theory, data and analyses
Organizers: Wim van Oorschot, Heejung Chung
Course goals
Increasingly researchers are interested in the effects of socio-economic, socio-cultural and institutional contexts on people’s behaviour, attitudes and beliefs. Multi-level analyses techniques provide tools for such analyses and are gaining more interest in the field of social sciences. This EDACwowe Workshop aims to increase the participant’s understanding of the theories and practices of multi-level approaches, along with better knowledge of how to find and set up multi-level data sets using the data resources provided through the EDACwowe website. More specifically, it seeks to introduce, explain and demonstrate the combined use of data from different levels (country, region, individual) and character (quantitative, quantified qualitative data) in simultaneous analyses. With multi-level analysis techniques, questions can be answered as to the relative effects of institutional level and individual level factors on people’s attitudes, beliefs and/or behaviour in the fields of work and welfare. Note that this is not a workshop where advanced statistical methods of multi-level modelling are trained. It has an introductory aim, with emphasis on multi-level analysis theory, data, and various analytical techniques.
The course is aimed at Ph.D students within the RECWOWE network, concerned with research in the topics of work, care, welfare and social policy. Participants should have at least a basic understanding of regression analysis and quantitative techniques.
The application will consists of a motivation letter, explaining also what participants expect from the course, how this workshop will contribute to their research and the stage their Ph.D project is in (starting up, mid, end) (a total of 1 page max), as well as an abstract of their research project (200 words max). Also, during the workshop, the participants are asked to give short presentations concerning how their research questions are or can be linked to multi-level approaches, and (if present) about preliminary findings of data analyses.
The course program consists of lectures, workshops, training and consultation. Students can bring their own data, if they like, and use them in the workshops and get feedback on problems they encounter.
