In the framework of dissemination activities of the European Network of excellence on Reconciling Work and Welfare (RECWOWE), the Observatoire social européen is pleased to invite you to a public debate on :

Flexible today, secure tomorrow?

Labour markets, pensions reforms in a context of economic crisis

Brussels , 23rd March 2009 - 14.00 - 17.30

Presented by Prof. Karl Hinrichs, University of Bremen and Niels Ploug, The Danish National Institute of Social Research.

The discussion will be introduced by Elise Willame, former President of the European Social Protection Committee.

The presentation will be discussed by Jos Berghman, Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven.

In recent decades labour market reforms have led to the growing relevance of new so-called “atypical” jobs, and income security during old-age has been challenged by pension reforms. As a result of both trends, some questions are still to be addressed: to what extent do the new “atypical” contracts provide social protection against old-age? Which are the pension prospects, of those (mostly young) workers who spend at least a part of their career in flexible employment relationships?

The meeting will focus on these tensions and other relevant questions by presenting the conclusions of the research task ‘Flexible Today, Secure Tomorrow?’ chaired by K. Hinrichs (University of Bremen), M. Jessoula (University of Milan) and N. Ploug (Danish Institute of Social Research), where the concept of flexicurity has been analysed in term of the relationships between job (in)security and income (in)security during the old-age.

This initiative is organised by DIAC, the Dialogue Centre of RECWOWE. Its objective is to develop an ongoing and structured dialogue between the research community, policy makers in charge of labour market and welfare policies, as well as social partners, NGOs and practitioners.

This event is organised in collaboration with the Central Economic Council, the National Labour Council and the Observatoire social européen.
