RECWOWE organises jointly with the University of Oxford a conference on:

"The Dualisation of European Societies?"

The conference will be held at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford.

Inequality in most advanced industrial societies has increased during the past decades (OECD 2008). This conference is to address the issue of increasing inequalities by analysing the interrelationships of labour market developments, social policies and political developments within various societies, with a special focus on processes of dualisation which have the potential of creating new groups of insiders and outsiders.

The concept of dualisation relates to processes of bifurcation, which means that only insiders have access to employment based on standard employment relationships, are sufficiently covered by social protection schemes and represented i the political realm, while outsiders usually have to cope with unemployment or atypical employment, low level of pay and social protection as well as limited political representation.

Among others, the conference will focus on the question of how these different types of outsiderhood are interrelated and to what extent the various types of exclusion have contrbuted to the increase in inequality. A comparative perspective promises insights into why some countries witness lower levels of dualisation whereas for other it has become a core characteristic.

The conference is organised by : Patrick Emmenegger (University of Southern Denmark, Odense), Bruno Palier (Sciences-Po, Paris), Martin Seeleib-Kaiser (University of Oxford) and is supported by RECWOWE, Oxford University and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
